“Working together to teach our children respect and responsibility with parental involvement and community support”
Where We Are Today
Education is highly valued at Sunchild First Nation and is one of the Nation’s core strengths. The Nation’s youth receive a quality education at the Sunchild First Nation School located on reserve. The school has more than 70 staff members and 400 students from kindergarten to Grade 12, from both the Sunchild and O’Chiese First Nations. In 2009, the school went through an 11 million dollar expansion, where the Chief and other elders were involved in reviewing and guiding the design towards a multi-functioning facility that met the needs of the community. Some of the expansion projects included: new corridors, classroom and gymnasium upgrades, skylights and new multi-purpose spaces that can be used in various ways to suit many needs. The school serves as an important hub and community anchor for Sunchild.
The school offers students a high quality curriculum which includes a robust physical education program (including many sports teams and Canada’s first and only First Nation cheerleading team on reserve), cultural lessons, and academic classes based on the Alberta Education Curriculum.
Where We Are Going
Sunchild First Nation School is dedicated to student-centered programming that promotes academic excellence as well as exposing students to fun and engaging extracurricular activities. Our goal is to ensue that all students become critical thinkers, active problem-solvers, inquisitive readers, diligent researchers, prolific writers, and culturally aware of what it means to be First Nations. As a staff we are here to support students daily, by any means possible to ensure that each student can reach their fullest potential.
